Glycine celebrates 100th anniversary with aviation legends

Founded by Eugene Meylan in 1914, Glycine Watch S.A. set its base in Bienne, Switzerland, for 100 years. With its reputation and strong association to the aviation field, Glycine strived to create the best and most practical pilot’s watches throughout the century.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Glycine’s Fine Swiss Watchmaking.  The brand was proud to present its celebration luncheon in the Hong Kong Aviation Club with special appearance by President and CEO of Glycine, Mr. Stephan Lack.

Set in the Hong Kong Aviation Club, a famous historical structure established in the 1920’s, Glycine’s celebration also featured the presence of well-achieved local talent, Mr. Raymond Wong, and the Founder and Chairman of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Hong Kong, Mr. Francis Chin.  Another highlight of the event was the exhibition of retired single engine aircraft, BEAGLE PUP-100.  The guests were delighted by the chance of witnessing this important piece of Hong Kong aviation history.  BEAGLE PUP-100 was the first single engine aircraft that completed cross-country flight from England to Hong Kong in 1971.  The determination to strive for excellence from the pilots of this aircraft during this historical flight, Mr. Francis Chin and his late brother, Mr. Dominic Chin, was an equivalent to Glycine’s spirit in fine watchmaking.  Both Glycine and the Chin Brothers set prominent milestone in their own field.

To let guests and partners gain a deeper understanding of Glycine and its achievements, 16 pieces of historic timepieces were displayed alongside with 2014 novelty collection.  Since the founding and the making of its first ladies’ watches with small-calibre movements in 1914, to the birth of its legendary “AIRMAN” series, the first automatic watches with a double 24-hour display that were favored by the US Army in 1950’s, Glycine has never rested in building its significant role in Swiss watchmaking.

Among the novelties that were displayed, Airman AIRFIGHTER received great attention from the guests, as it was highlighted as the special model launched to celebrate Glycine’s 100th anniversary.  It is first and foremost a genuine pilot's watch with three individual time zones. The second time zone is located on the inner bezel and can be easily read thanks to a dynamic GMT hand with white triangular tip in the 24-hour zone. The third time zone is operated using the 24-hour rotating bezel, typical of the Airman by simply turning the bezel after releasing the lower locking crown.  Anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire glass on both sides protects the watch from external influences and guarantees maximum readability of the three time zones.  The watch is enclosed in a striking and carefully worked 46mm case. It is fitted with a chronograph mechanism with the revolutionary sliding actuator located on the left side of the case, which can be easily achieved using the right thumb.  The Airman AIRFIGHTER is driven by a high-quality decorated movement of the automatic calibre GL754.
